Can Using Fitness Equipment Cause More Harm Than Good?

While everyone knows there are huge benefits to a daily exercise routine, many people do not take proper steps to ensure their workouts are as safe as possible. It is no surprise that each year, thousands of people visit emergency rooms with workout related injuries, many of which happen in the gym. This leads to the inevitable question: can using fitness equipment cause more harm than good? While fitness equipment can be a valuable tool, it is important to be aware of some of the risks associated with using these machines.

Many exercise machines utilize a set course that typically works one specific muscle group or one area of the body. While this may be effective for toning a problem area, it can lead to trouble. Not only are the same muscles being worked over and over, the same joints are being worked constantly as well. This can lead to joint pain, joint or tissue damage, and even repetitive motion syndrome.

Several other types of fitness equipment require the user to be sitting. This position does tighten up several muscle groups, but can cause other muscles groups to weaken, and natural stability to be lost. Lack of stability can be a dangerous problem that can lead to strains, sprains, or serious injury. Many types of joint and lower back injuries are associated with stability issues as well. Balance issues can also result, and preexisting conditions that may already be a concern can worsen.

Motorized machines tend to do the work for you. While your body is moving and getting exercise, it is often forced to move faster than it normally would, or be forced in a direction that is beyond your normal movement. A good example of this is a motorized treadmill. The rapid movement of the belt causes the user to run as fast as the belt is moving. This can cause the feet to be pushed or pulled in an atypical fashion, which can lead to ankle and knee problems. Aside from joint problems, treadmills can lead to abnormal running techniques, which will become evident outside of the gym when you run in a natural setting.

If you want to begin or expand your exercise routine to involve fitness equipment, it is important to educate yourself on proper usage techniques and to vary your workout. Personal trainers, exercise classes, and gym staff are great resources to help ensure the safest possible exercise session.
