I’m sure by now you have heard that there are many health benefits of regular exercise. What you may not know is that exercise is a secret stress buster. In addition to increasing energy levels, building muscle, burning calories, and helping to prevent some types of diseases, exercise can actually lower the production of stress hormones; allowing your body to offset the natural stress response.
Exercise secretly busts stress in many ways. Regular activity has been shown to improve overall confidence and mood. Anxiety, mild depression, even the feeling of being overwhelmed seems to melt away with a brisk walk, a few laps in the pool, or a round of aerobics. Many people report forgetting the trials of the day, the stresses of a job, and the squabbles with co-workers after completing some form of exercise. You may feel calmer, more focused, and better able to take on the next challenge. This is due to the brain releasing large amounts of “cheerful hormones”, also known as endorphins. You may also have heard this referred to as a “runner’s high”.
Any form of physical exercise can help reduce stress levels. A vigorous game of tennis, a pick up game of basketball, even evening strolls with your dog all help ease the stresses of daily life. Exercise routines do not need to take a great deal of time but should be scheduled. If you are only able to workout in the evening, make sure you set that time aside just for you every day. This will encourage you to stick with your activity and help you unwind. Try to vary activities to avoid boredom, and do not be afraid to try new things. Encourage a friend to take a walk with you, take a yoga class, or join a sports team.
In addition to exercising for better overall physical and mental health, consider treating yourself to a little “me time”. Meditation is a great way to focus and unwind after a long day. This process helps the body relax, become more centered, and reduce stress. A relaxing bubble bath, or a soothing massage further help to alleviate bodily tension. Deep breathing exercises can be used during exercise routines as well as throughout the day. These techniques help the muscles relax and can allow your body a bit of a stress reprieve. Whichever type of exercise you choose, the important thing to remember is to keep moving toward your goal of a healthier body and mind.
