Interval training is far from a new concept, but has recently been seeing a resurgence of popularity in the world of fitness. Once thought of as used by only professional athletes, novice exercisers are now enjoying the many benefits of this fitness tool. Generally defined as completing several repetitions of high-speed, intense exercise followed by periods of low impact activity or rest, interval training can be a great way to supercharge your exercise routine.
There are several benefits to adding interval training to a normal routine. Once such benefit is an improvement in your aerobic ability. This is due to the fact that cardiovascular health will improve which will allow the body to be able to exercise for longer periods of time, with higher levels of intensity. You will be able to complete your typical workout in less time, such as completing a sixty-minute workout in forty-five minutes, or gain even more physical benefits by continuing on at the same pace for the full hour. By varying the intensity of your exercise routine, you will also be able to burn more calories. Increasing intensity levels for even a few short minutes burns many more calories than exercising at a constant pace. Adding interval training also helps to keep boredom from setting in as is common with a typical workout.
Interval training does not need to be complicated, or utilize complex methods. You do not need any special equipment; simple modifications to your current exercise routine are all that is needed. For example, if you go for daily walks, you could add periods of speed walking, or short bursts of jogging. Choose landmarks to start and stop the more intense activity; mailboxes, lampposts, telephone poles, and trees make excellent choices. Begin by walking as usual; when you see the first landmark, begin the more rapid activity, stopping when you see the next landmark and resuming normal activity.
It is important to note that overuse injuries may result from strenuous activity. Muscles, tendons, bones, and ligaments may become sore and periods of rest may be needed. During strenuous activity, muscles produce waste products that are released into the body and may make activity painful or tiresome. By limiting intense levels of activity and properly alternating exercises, the buildup of this waste will be reduced and the chance of injury will diminish. This training method is not appropriate for everyone. People with certain health conditions, those who do not workout regularly, and those with specific injuries should consult their health care provider before beginning interval training.
