Which Should I Choose – Pilates or Yoga?

Yoga is a more meditative practice that is less regimented. It is a more holistic program that focuses on both physical and mental fitness. In addition to practicing physical exercises, yoga encourages breathing techniques, meditation, even chanting. There are many versions of yoga making it suitable for just about everyone at any age or fitness level.

While both pilates and yoga are slower and easier on the body than other traditional forms of exercise, most people tend to gravitate toward one or the other. Most commonly, people tend to choose a program that corresponds to their personality type. Those who have high-strung personalities, or those with a lot of energy, tend to choose pilates. People with a more laid-back demeanor usually tend toward yoga. Some people argue that the fitness program that is most opposite to your personality is the one that should be chosen. The thought is this will help bring more balance into your life, leading to a more beneficial experience.

Whether deciding upon pilates or yoga, it is very important to start off with a professional instructor. Classes can be taken one-on-one, or in a group, and are often held on weekends, evenings, and throughout the day. Both programs require a great deal of experience and training to achieve the best possible results. Instructors have undergone proper training in the art of the exercise, as well as in the whole anatomy of the human body.
